GSL AWARD SELECTION

1. Procedure. All official GSL Championship Class and Master Awards winners are selected by the GSL Championship Judges: Mark S. Gustavson, Bob Wick a third person pre-selected by Mark and Bob. After first determining that the entries are placed in the proper Class, the GSL Judges evaluate the entries, on a Class by Class basis. The GSL Championship Judges "walk through" the Class, doing an initial examination of the entries for basic craftsmanship and initial impressions of the construction of the entry. Entries are then judged on detailing, technical innovation, operational features, finish, and other distinguishing characteristics. No written score "points" sheet is used, and all decisions by the judges are agreed upon by unanimous vote following multiple examinations and evaluations of each entry in a Class. All GSL Judges' decisions are final.

GSL contestants should note that all models entered in competition are picked up: i) for judging, and ii) by representatives of Scale Auto and Model Cars magazines to permit photography for the publications that will cover the GSL Championship. This means that your model will be picked up several times, but always with respect and only by a very limited number of individuals who are preapproved by GSL officials. Therefore, while every attempt is made to protect the integrity and safety of each model entered in the Championship, accidents can happen, though they have been very rare. Each entrant is advised to leave a note by their model if he/she wish to specify where/how their model should be picked up, or if there are any particularly delicate parts or assemblies that might be unusually vulnerable to damage during the judging/photography process. Please read our disclaimer on the GSL legal page found here.

JUDGING, CLASS AWARDS, MASTER AWARDS AND PRIVATE AWARDS

Restricted Access During GSL Championship Judging. No Adult or Junior-Class competitor, GSL Championship attendee, or other unauthorized person is permitted in the GSL Championship Contest Hall during judging. Only GSL Championship personnel, and pre-authorized representatives of the hobby media, are permitted in the Contest Hall. Additional GSL administrative personnel may also be admitted at the discretion of the GSL Judges.

Awards. The Special Awards, Class Awards, and the Master Awards will be presented during the GSL Championship Breakfast and Awards Presentation held on Sunday morning, May 3, 2009 from approximately 8:30 a.m. through 11:00 a.m. (Times are subject to change). Remember that the GSL Badge will be required to attend the Awards Presentation (GSL Badges are available by registering. If you wish to eat, the cost of the Breakfast must be pre-paid, and you will receive a ticket for the meal).

a). Class Awards. Fourth Place through Best of Class awards will be presented in each Class where there are a minimum of four (4) models. In special cases, duplicate awards for Second through Fourth Places in each Class may be presented.

There will only be one Best of Class award for each Class. If there are fewer than four entries in any Class, the awards will be presented in descending order from Best of Class. The winners for the Group 9 Class are selected by popular ballot.

b). Master Awards. The GSL Championship presents the following Master Awards, selected by the GSL Championship Judges: BEST OF SHOW (selected only from among the Best of Class winners), Best Paint/Finish, Best Interior, Best Detail, Dave Shuklis Memorial Engineering Award, and the Gerald Wingrove Scratchbuilding Award. The Modelers' Choice Master Award is selected from the entries by voting by those in attendance. All Master Awards will be presented. In addition to the special GSL Championship plaque, the Best of Show winner and Best in Class Junior winner will each receive a specially-embroidered GSL Championship jacket from GSL Championship sponsor Custom Design Marketing, complete with the GSL-XXII logo and the winner's name!

c). Special (Private) Awards. In addition to the official GSL Championship Awards, there are a few privately-sponsored special awards presented at the GSL Championship that are not selected by GSL Judges. Scale Auto magazine will present its "Best Original Design" award, Model Cars magazine will present its "Best Use of Color" award, the MCMA will present the Bob Barnett Memorial Award and the Klingon Kruiser Award, and the Goodguys Rod & Custom Association will present the "Model D'Elegance Award." The Museum will also present the "Moose is Loose" Award (in the memory of Andy "Moose" Kallen) to the GSL participant who best represents the spirit of GSL conviviality and hospitality, and "The Augie" for the best presentation of machined parts. All Special Awards will be presented during the Awards Presentation and Buffet Sunday morning. No other private awards will be presented at GSL-XXII.
